चञ्चलं हि मनः कृष्ण प्रमाथि बलवद्दृढम् |
तस्याSSहं निग्रहं मन्ये वायोरिव सुदुष्करम् ||
Mind is flickering. I am not able to control it; for it is even harder to control than air.
Lord Krishna replies that - To make the mind stable, though a difficult task, it can be achieved through practice alone - Arjuna says
There are many ways to achieve that state. One such method is listening. There is a term in Sanskrit - "बहुश्रुतः" - "Bahushruta". It can be derived in 3 different ways:
Bahubhi: Shrotavyam - बहुभिः श्रोतव्यम् - listening from different people
Bahudha: Shrotavyam - बहुधः श्रोतव्यम् - listening variety of concpets
Bahusha: Shrotavyam - बहुशः श्रोतव्यम् - listening for a number of times
A generel way of being a Bahushruta, practiced by ancestors is by attending Upanyaasams. These Upanyaasams give us a wide range of information, and make us Bahushruta. There is another word in Sanskrit - श्रवणम् (Sharavanam) - meaning to hear, to listen. This is considered a good Samskaara (Practice) for विषयज्ञानम् (Vishayajnaanam) - knowledge.
श्रुत्वा धर्मं विजानाति श्रुत्वा त्यजति दुर्मतिम् ।
श्रुत्वा ज्ञानमवाप्नोति श्रुत्वा मोक्षमवाप्नुयात् ।।१।।
By listening, we know Dharma, restrain bad thoughts, gain knowledge, and finally gain salvation.
Generally, there are 8 qualities of Buddhi:
शुश्रूषा श्रवणं चैव ग्रहणं धारणां तथा ।
ऊहापोहोऽर्थ विज्ञानं तत्त्वज्ञानं च धीगुणाः ॥
The first quality is शुश्रूषा - the intention to listen. Then श्रवणं - the actual listening. Then comes grasping, holding, etc.
Prahlada developed this Samskaara while he was in his mother's womb. Narada started to tell stories to Prahlada's mother, but it was Prahlada who continued to listen from the womb. Also, Gajendra cried out loud and hence Lord Vishnu was able to come and save him.
श्रवणं कीर्तनं विष्णोः स्मरणं पादसेवनम् ।
अर्चनं वन्दनं दास्यं सख्यमात्मनिवेदनम् ॥
Of different ways of praying, listening stands first.
While developing a language skill in one person, we first concentrate on Listening - LSRW. Also, a child first hears. It doesn't speak. It later on converts this hearing into listening. It then learns by listening.
In our sacred texts, it said that learning with smell would keep the knowledge forever, learning with ears would keep it for decades and learning with eyes would keep the knowledge for years. Since learning via Smell is almost impossible now, we depend on our Ears and our listening capacity to gain knowledge.
So the art of listening needs to be developed to achieve great success.
